Where To Go In May

As the northern hemisphere warms and a double bank holiday awaits us in May, we’ll be keen to take advantage of these prime conditions to go jet-setting. The shoulder season means we can get some great bargains – keep your eye out for knock-down prices and don’t forget to do a thorough comparison across providers, as there’ll be more variation.

Whether you’re tempted by the last of the snowy ski slopes or sunny fiestas in Mexico, there’s so much going on in May that it’s hard to pass up. Here’s our pick of the destinations.

Madrid, Spain

The capital of Spain is a holidaymaker’s treat at any time of the year, but it’s at its best in May. That’s when the city’s many boulevards and city parks burst in floral displays, adding another layer of vibrancy to the youthful, fun-loving destination.

Even if you’ve been before, there’s plenty of goings-on. In addition to its wealth of world-renowned art, there’s a special art and wine tour of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum that shows off the influence of wine in the gallery’s paintings before a bespoke wine-tasting session at San Miguel Market. Or coincide your visit with a big concert – both Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa are in town over the month. For a holiday to remember, it’s just a case of getting your hands on some tickets.

Ottawa, Canada

With new direct flights from London Heathrow to Ottawa with Air Canada, Canada’s capital sure has plenty to offer in May. Running 9th to 19th of May, the annual Canada Tulip Festival is the biggest draw. You’ll find over 300,000 vibrantly-coloured tulips along the Commissioner’s Park along the Rideau Canal. These are gifts from the Netherlands to Canada, to serve as a reminder of Canada’s role in liberating the Netherlands and offering refuge to its royal family during the Second World War. Alongside the beauty of these flower beds, you’ll find a host of activities, from outdoor movies to light displays to arts and crafts workshops.

Meanwhile in the heart of the city, you’ll find bars, restaurants, and attractions worthy of Canada’s capital. While the Parliament is closed for renovation, you can still take tours of its Senate and House of Commons, and take part in a free immersive exhibition located minutes from the London-inspired buildings.

Corsica, France

For those who love getting into nature during their holidays, Corsica is a top choice at this time of the year. The temperature is around 22C, which means it’s cardigan weather for long, lush lunches, and the perfect temperature for more strenuous activities around the French-owned island. If you’re up for a real challenge, cycle from Corte into the Niolo valley, all the way up to the Col Vergio: at 1,480m – it’s the highest road pass on the island. To stay close to ground, try walking or cycling the coastal pathway from Macinaggio to Centuri, France’s leading lobster fishing port.

As May is in the shoulder season, it’s exactly the right time to make the most of great temperatures, quieter roads and cheaper prices.

Puebla, Mexico

The Mexican celebration of Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is when the country marks its liberation from French forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While the day is celebrated around the world – with some celebrations involving more cultural appropriation than others – nowhere celebrates more than the city of Puebla. The historical destination is an easy two-hour bus ride southeast of Mexico City.

Celebrations continue throughout the month, with re-enactments, feasts and parades. Be prepared: it’s not the tequila-filled party that’s often portrayed in the States. Instead, at this important site, it’s a homage to Mexican history and culture. As an eye-opening slice of Mexican tradition, Cinco de Mayo in Puebla is a must-do on your travels around Latin American.

Ischgl, Austria

If you fancy some late season skiing, you can squeeze in a last run or several at Ischgl in Austria if you arrive at the very start of May. It’s known for being a party destination, but the tail end of the season also brings out its more elegant side, as an upmarket village with north-facing slopes that retain snow until later than most other resorts.

New to the area is the gorgeous Silvretta spa, with a giant rooftop pool and an ice rink for good measure. But if it’s the party you want, be sure to catch the Top of the Mountain closing concert on the 3rd of May. The 30th anniversary of the bash sees Grammy-nominated band OneRepublic headlining.
