Where To Go On Holiday In September
September holidays can’t be beat. It’s the very start of shoulder season, and those looking for value for money will find that prices drop off a cliff as soon as schools go back. But the weather change is far less dramatic: in the northern hemisphere, you’ll mostly find the warm temps and sunny days of summer, so it’s the best of both worlds.
As there’s so much on offer, it’s trickier than usual to narrow down which amazing destination to visit – the size of the globe certainly becomes clear at times like these. To help inspire your next holiday, here’s our pick of the places to visit in September.
Mykonos, Greece
On Greece’s fun-loving island, the party continues well past summer. Though big-name DJs are winding up their season, you’ll still find plenty of music in the air at its many high-end beach clubs and nightclubs. The average daily temperature is 27C and dry days are pretty much guaranteed, so perfect for catching tans on its white sandy beaches and glittering Aegean Sea. A three-hour flight from the UK, Mykonos is often cited as the most luxe island in Greece, but that means that summer isn’t great value for money. So if you want to see the allure of Mykonos without the peak prices but with all the blue skies it’s famous for, September is exactly the right time to visit.
Disneyland, Paris
We all love a theme park, and Disneyland is a magic kingdom indeed. But it hasn’t been easy to visit this past couple of months with huge swells of visitors at Disneyland itself, and the Olympics making Paris feel incredibly busy too. So if you fancied a rollercoaster of a getaway without peak crowds – because what’s the point of going to theme park if most of the time is spent in queues – September looks to be the ideal time. Temperatures are a comfortable 22C, meaning all you’ll need is a light jacket for the evening. September is also the last month to catch Disney Symphony of Colours, a night time drone parade in the sky. Lighting up Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and its backdrop, expect a host of synchronised drones, lasers and video projections that will leave kids – and those who are kids at heart – spellbound.
Lake Titicaca, Peru
If you’re heading to Peru for the first time, there’s a near-to-definite chance you’ll be stopping off at the incredible archaeological site of Macchu Picchu, whether it’s by trekking or train. But the history-laden country has so much more to offer too. Whether it’s natural wonders or unique culture you’re after, Lake Titicaca has enough to make it a must-see stop. It’s the lake with the highest altitude in the world – and you’ll feel it as the rays are strong, nights are cold, the lake is a curious blue, and the peaks that surround it are gorgeously snow-capped. What really makes it special are the floating islands within it. A boat tour zips guests around these islands, including the famous Uros Floating Island, made up of reeds that islanders hand-weave and lay flat on the surface. September is the best time to visit, as it’s after the busy summer, but before the wet season starts in November.
New York, USA
You can’t go wrong with New York in September. It’s the time when the city dwellers have returned from holiday and get back in the swing of things – you’ll definitely feel a sense of purpose in the air while walking around Manhattan. So if like city breaks where you see your destination at its most natural, September is a great time to go. You also can’t go wrong with the weather. Land during a hot spell, and it will feel like an extension of summer. But even if you head over towards the end of the month and find touches of autumn in the air, there’s no better place to welcome in the start of its prettiest season. Plus, there’s always plenty going on in the city that never sleeps. Catch big-name Broadway shows like Hadestown, Back to the Future, Six and Moulin Rouge. Or concerts this month include Pearl Jam, Nicki Minaj and Sabrina Carptener – so something for everyone.
Sossusvlei, Namibia
For a holiday to remember, Namibia can’t be beat. It’s one of Africa’s best safari destinations, but it also has incredible natural wonders, like the area of Sossusvlei within the largest conservation area in Africa (the Namib-Naukluft National Park). It’s famous for its rusty-orange dunes that reach up to 400m high, dotted with isolated baobab trees that together, makes it feels like an otherworldly place. September is an ideal time to go as crowds ease off, yet it’s the start of the short spring season where it’s warm, dry, and enjoys low humidity.
