Where to travel in November

November isn’t the most popular month to travel – it’s when the warmest countries in mainland Europe start putting on their coats, and we hunker down ahead of Christmas. But actually, it’s a smart time to head off on holiday. Travel companies are often more flexible with prices, and journeys aren’t as hectic as they might be in the height of summer season.

Moreover, November is a great time to visit countries that are coming into their own. Whether that’s destinations are embracing its winter season, or those that are about to hit their peak heat, it’s a month of great opportunities. Here are our favourite places to head on holiday in November.

Agadir, Morocco

If you’re searching for sun, it’s a great time to head due south, to the warmer climes of Morocco. The North African country is still fairly balmy, and on the southerly coast of Agadir, you can expect temps of 23C on an average day. There’s more than warm weather to tempt you there: you can’t go to Morocco without grabbing a bargain at a market, so make a beeline for the Souk El Had. You’ll be able to pick up spices, handicrafts, souvenirs and clothes, as well as stop for a Moroccan mint tea. Or to get out into nature, Paradise Valley is called that for a reason. An area with forests, natural pools, dramatic rocks and untouched beauty, you’ll feel a world away from the stresses at home.

Guatemala

In November, Guatemala begins to enter its dry season. So while you can bet on the weather being favourable – expect temps anywhere between 23C and 32C – prices are only just rising, so there’ll be bargains to be had if you’re quick about it. But at any time of year, this central American country is known for being one of the most budget-friendly countries on the Gringo Trail, while also being warm, friendly and full of amazing sites to visit. With ancient Mayan ruins alongside busy cities bustling with life, no wonder it’s one of the trending destinations of recent years.

Perugia, Italy

If you’ve been to Italy, you know the prevalence of Baci chocolate. The chocolate treats are loved by a country known for their impeccable taste in food – so you know it’s going to be quality stuff. Every year Perugia, the birthplace of this chocolate, hosts Eurochocolate, the international chocolate exhibition where chocoholics can get their fill of the good stuff. When you’re suitably satiated, walk it off with a peruse around the capital of Umbria’s famous sights, like Galleria Nazionale Dell’umbria, Basilica di San Pietro and Porta Sole, the ancient gate of the Etruscan city wall that’s a perfect place to stop for an autumnal sunset. Perugia is in the very centre of Italy, and a three-hour train ride from either Rome or Florence, making it nicely accessible if you don’t mind looking out at the Italian countryside

St Gallen, Switzerland

There’s no replicating Switzerland’s beauty, but you have to pay a price to visit – you could spend as much in one week in Switzerland as you’d spend elsewhere in two weeks. To keep the costs to a minimum but still see the appealing aspects, visit in the low-season month of November. At this time of year, St Gallen is a wise choice. While it’s an average of 6C, it means you can cosily enjoy the fondue and bratwurst that the area is famous for. The student city is also minutes away from Konstanz in Germany and Bregenz in Austria, so you can hop over the border to experience another country – and avail of its better exchange rate.

Phuket

Like Guatemala, Phuket is just coming out of its rainy season in November. Here it means a few extra cloudy days, but in exchange you’ll get excellent value for money. As Thailand’s largest island, there’s so much to do here you’ll be spoilt for choice – whether that’s indulging in its ample outdoors activities or delving into the heart of Phuket, the Chinese/Portuguese-influenced Old Town. Get up close and personal with elephants at the Green Elephant Sanctuary Park, where the animals are ethically cared for. Hike up to the Big Buddha, Thailand’s most famous monument, or cool off on the pristine Freedom Beach. The water is around 29C too, so it will feel like you’re bathing in gorgeous bath water.
