Here are a few things to check before you set off for Italy.

Tell us about any medical conditions

Before you buy your policy, make sure you tell us about any pre-existing medical conditions. This helps us provide the right cover for your holiday.

If a medical condition isn't declared and you later need to make a claim, your claim could be declined in part or in full. That's why it's important to answer every medical question carefully.

Your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you access to state healthcare in Italy on the same basis as Italian residents.

A GHIC is useful to have when travelling in Italy, but it doesn't provide the same protection as travel insurance. It won't cover emergency medical repatriation, cancellation or lost baggage, so it's important to have the right cover in place before you travel.

You'll also have access to our FREE Air Doctor service. If you have a minor illness or injury, you can book an appointment with a local doctor through the Air Doctor app or website. You’ll be offered an appointment in person or by video consultation, and we'll cover the resulting fee*.

Before travelling to Italy, check that your passport meets the latest entry requirements. It must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Italy and be less than 10 years old on the day you travel. If your passport is lost or stolen while you're away, you can apply for an Emergency Travel Document to help return to the UK.

If you're travelling from the UK, you'll need to follow the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) when entering Italy. On your first visit, you'll usually have your photo taken and fingerprints scanned instead of receiving a passport stamp.

Border checks may take longer at Italy's busiest airports and ports, especially during school holidays and the summer season. Arrive in good time and follow the guidance from border staff.
