Planning a Trip to Malta? Here’s What You Need to Know

Malta is one of the Mediterranean's most popular holiday destinations. It offers a mix of history, culture and beautiful coastlines, making it ideal for couples, families and solo travellers alike. Explore the UNESCO listed streets of Valletta, wander through the ancient city of Mdina or take a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon. If you're looking for adventure, Gozo is known for its diving spots, coastal walks and scenic views.

Malta Travel Essentials

Here are a few things worth noting before you travel to Malta.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure you declare them to us when you get your quote. This helps us provide the right cover for your trip.

If you need to make a claim and haven't declared a medical condition, your claim could be declined in part or in full. That's why it's important to answer all medical questions and make sure your details are correct before you travel.

Make sure to take your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) with you when you travel to Malta. It gives you access to state healthcare at the same cost as a Maltese resident, and in some cases, for free.

If you need medical treatment and use your GHIC, we won't charge the excess on your related medical claim. However, your GHIC doesn't cover everything. It won't pay for emergency medical repatriation or other travel insurance benefits, so it's important to have the right cover in place before you travel.

If you become seriously ill or injured while you're in Malta, our 24/7 Emergency Medical Helpline is here to help. Day or night, our experienced team will make sure you get the care and support you need.

As a Switched On policyholder, you'll also get access to our FREE Air Doctor service. If you suffer a minor illness or injury while you’re in Malta, you can book an appointment through the Air Doctor app or website to see a doctor in person, or via a video consultation. And we’ll cover the resulting fee, so there's nothing for you to pay and claim back on your return*.

Before you travel, check that your passport meets the entry requirements for Malta. It should be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Malta and must be less than 10 years old on the day you travel. It's a good idea to check your passport well before your departure date. If you need to renew it, allow enough time for it to arrive before you travel.

If your passport is lost or stolen while you're away, you can apply for an Emergency Travel Document to help you return to the UK.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in place for UK travellers visiting Malta and other countries in the Schengen Area. On your first trip, you'll usually need to have your photo taken and fingerprints scanned at border control. This is instead of having your passport stamped.

It may take a little longer to pass through border control, especially during busy travel periods. Allow some extra time and follow the instructions given by border staff.
